What to Wear for a Photoshoot in London

What to wear for a London photoshoot: solid colours that stand out against stone and red phone boxes, a layer for the weather, shoes for walking, and what couples should coordinate.

Updated October 2026

For a London photoshoot, wear solid colours, bring a layer you are happy to be photographed in, and wear shoes you can walk in. London’s backdrops are mostly grey stone, red brick, white stucco and the odd flash of red from a phone box or a bus, so plain, mid-to-strong colours stand out and busy patterns compete. The weather changes fast, and most shoots walk between two or three spots. The listings themselves say the same: wear comfortable walking shoes and check the forecast.

Colours that work

  • Solid colours over prints. A plain coat, dress or jumper reads clearly at any distance; small patterns can shimmer in photos.
  • Think about the backdrop. Against grey stone at Westminster or St Paul’s, colour pops. In front of a red phone box, red clothes disappear into it; navy, cream, camel or green look better.
  • Neutrals for a timeless look. Camel, cream, navy and black go with every London backdrop and with each other.
  • Avoid big logos. They date the photos and pull the eye.

For couples and families

Coordinate, do not match. Pick two or three colours that go together and share them out, rather than wearing the same thing. One strong colour each, or one person in colour and one in neutrals, works well. For children, comfortable clothes they will not fight in matter more than the outfit.

The weather

London rain is the main risk. Bring a layer that looks good in photos, a good coat counts, and if rain is likely, a clear umbrella keeps you in the picture where a black one would hide you. If the forecast is bad, talk to the photographer about moving the session: the shoots on this site have free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Shoes and changes

Most shoots walk between spots, so wear shoes you can manage for an hour or more on pavements and cobbles. If you want two looks, ask the photographer whether there is a sensible place to change; on a one-hour shoot, a jacket on and off is often the easiest second look.
